How often should I see a dentist?

The American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines recommend visiting a dentist at least twice a year for a checkup and professional cleaning. We recommend that patients with good oral health schedule a checkup and hygiene visit every 6 months. If you need more frequent visits, we’ll let you know. Checkups are important because, even if you don’t notice any pain or problems with your teeth, we may find signs of potential issues. At your hygiene appointment, we’ll clean plaque, tartar, and hardened food particles from your teeth. We’ll also make sure your gums are healthy and strong.

My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

Bleeding is usually a sign of a problem. When gums bleed, the cause usually stems from brushing too hard or from early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis. We can consult with you on the proper toothbrush and pressure for safe, effective daily oral care. If your gums show signs of periodontal disease, we may recommend a deep hygiene treatment to alleviate your symptoms. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for adults and has been linked to many overall health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and respiratory problems. Untreated, gum disease can cause significant damage to your health, so call for an assessment now.

I have old, dark fillings. Is there any hope for my smile?

Porcelain veneers are designed to look like your natural teeth and are individually and permanently attached to the fronts of your existing teeth. Bonding utilizes a composite material made of plastic to fill in areas of your teeth and correct chipping and shape problems. Both porcelain veneers and bonding are color-matched to the rest of your teeth.

My teeth are really in bad shape and I have been told I need to have them removed and get dentures. How long does it take to pull them and get the dentures?

Immediate dentures are designed to be put in on the same day that your teeth are pulled. Prior to that day, the dentist will see you 2-3 times to get your new denture ready. Regular dentures, however, take longer because they are made 6 weeks after you’ve had your teeth pulled.

I have a child who is afraid of the dentist and afraid of needles. What can you do?

Tell your child that this dentist has four children of his own that don’t mind coming to his office because he is very gentle. Many patients, especially children, have fear and anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist. That is understandable and something I am fully aware of. I apply whatever technique is necessary to make all patients comfortable and the procedure as pleasant and pain-free as possible, including staying abreast of new and easy ways to work on teeth.

I smoke and drink a lot of coffee, so I have yellow, stained teeth. Is there anything that can be done for that?

I start with the simple basics and work toward the more complex techniques until we’ve reached our cosmetic goal. First would be a good professional cleaning with appropriate home care training. Whitening (bleaching) for a minimum of 2 weeks would be the next step. Following that, we would consider veneers (facings) and crowns.

What would you tell a new patient who is afraid of needles?

There are many techniques that dentists use for getting beyond this fear and believe me, that it is a genuine fear. No one likes the thought of someone pushing a sharp needle into such a sensitive area as the mouth or gums.

For some patients, nitrous gas totally relaxes them but again, it depends on the individual patient and what technique works best for them. My biggest compliments come from patients who walked into my office, afraid, but tell me they felt nothing during the procedure when they left.

We offer payment plans with Chase and CareCredit; 12 months interest free with approved credit. We also accept all major credit cards, including MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover.
