Preventative Dentistry

Daily brushing and flossing are essential to oral health. Routine checkups with a trusted dental professional are equally important. In-office cleanings can eliminate plaque and tartar buildup in hard-to-reach places, and regular exams give your dentist a chance to detect and treat any complications in their earliest stages. Dr. Goldberg is passionate about helping patients experience a better quality of life through excellent oral health. He can help you understand how the health of your teeth and gums affect every aspect of your health, and provide the treatment you need to achieve a healthy and beautiful smile.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

Routine Cleanings

The American Dental Association advises patients to have their teeth cleaned by a dental professional at least twice per year. When brushing and flossing normally at home, the goal is to remove plaque buildup before it hardens and becomes tartar. Even with excellent brushing skills, tartar buildup can occur on the surface of your teeth. Tartar buildup can irritate the gums and cause them to recede, or lead to periodontal disease. After your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned, we will apply a polish that will keep your teeth feeling fresh.

Sealants and Fluoride Treatments

Dental sealants may be applied to the surfaces of the molars to fill grooves where food can get caught and lead to the formation of cavities. This method of preventing tooth decay is fast and effective. It is commonly provided for children once their permanent teeth have fully erupted, but it can be equally beneficial for adults. Our hygienists can also provide you with a highly concentrated fluoride rinse that will help your teeth remain healthy.

Dental Examinations

After your cleaning, Dr. Goldberg will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and the inner structures of your mouth. In addition to a visual evaluation, he will also check all fillings, crowns, and other existing dental work. We will take x-rays to fully examine your teeth and jaw, and perform an assessment of your gums to check for periodontal disease. Lastly, Dr. Goldberg will examine your jaw movement to determine if you are at risk for developing TMJ disorder.

Oral Cancer Screenings

During your dental exam with Dr. Goldberg, he will perform an oral cancer screening using the latest dental technologies and procedures.

Most patients are unaware that early detection is their best defense and Dr. Goldberg has the necessary tools and expertise to spot the early warning signs that are often mistaken for other conditions.

Dr. Goldberg will also instruct you on how to watch for early warning signs at home, ensuring that you are also aware of early signs or potential red flags that can alert you of oral cancer.

This includes inspecting the inside of your mouth periodically to look for red or white patches, abnormal lumps, or sores that bleed easily can greatly reduce your risk of progressing into later stages of the disease.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, almost 50,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. If left untreated, oral oropharyngeal cancer can lead to death and it is estimated that almost 10,000 people die annually due to this disease.

The largest number of cases occur in people age 40 and over and the death rate is highly influenced by the late diagnosis, once the cancer has spread to other organs due to metastasis.

That said, smoking is a leading cause of oral cancer, so if you are a smoker, be sure to schedule an appointment with Dr. Goldberg to do an oral cancer screening as soon as you can.
